Cannaregio and the Jewish Ghetto Photographic theme (one day of teaching)

Street Photography, People & Portraits, Architecture, Using Light and Shadow, Reactivity to situations, Creativity and Learning to see

  • Cannaregio was settled before AD 1000, when the first dwellings were built on the islands of San Giovanni Crisostomo and Santi Apostoli, close to the Rialto.

  • The urban sprawl proceeded northwards, engulfing the convents and monasteries (the Misericordia, the Madonna dell'Orto, San'Alvise) on what were, until then, remote islands. But the Sestiere contains treasures in its own right.

  • On this district, special attention will be paid to number of palaces, dating from Byzantine period to the 18C, that are to be found in this Sestiere together with the large 16C quarter of the Ghetto, and the churches and monasteries, which are numerous in this area too.

  • We shall also encounter another of Venice's major town-planning schemes, the Strada Nuova, linking the city centre around Rialto with the Railway station.

  • At the end of the “Lista di Spagna”  we get to “Ponte delle Guglie” ended in 1580 and rebuilt in 1823 adding 4 spires (this is the only bridge in Venice with this sort of embellishment).

  • On the left, alongside the  canal “Tre Archi” we find the Jewish Ghetto, this is the area where up till 1527 the Jews had their homes, which are very high, some of them having as many as eight storeys today. Then we find  the “San Giobbe” area, for century the door of the city.

  • The area is characterized with the bridge “Tre Archi” (three arch) which is the only bridge of Venice with three arcade and the Saint Giobbe church,  consecrated in 1493 and where Doge Cristoforo Moro is buried.

  • Walking alongside the Fondamenta della Misericordia, we’ll get to Campo dei Mori and then Campo Madonna dell’Orto where the homonymous church lies, the church, just few step from “dei Mori” square (campo) it is a beautiful gothic temple, almost unique in Venice, here are many Tintoretto operas, the painter is also buried in the church.

This is the area covered by our Workshop, an area of Venice full of life and quiet at the same time.
